How to Choose Your Interior Materials
Four decisions that matter more than which finish you pick, written by the team who specify these materials every day.
Start with how the surface will be used, not how it looks
The most expensive mistake in an interior is specifying a beautiful surface for the wrong job. Before choosing a finish, sort every surface in the room into three groups: surfaces people touch daily, surfaces people see but rarely touch, and surfaces that get wet. Each group has a different correct answer, and getting this order right saves more money than negotiating on price ever will.
- High-touch surfaces
- Wardrobe shutters, kitchen fronts, study tables. These need laminate, acrylic or PETG — sealed, wipe-clean surfaces that survive fingernails, keys and cleaning cloths for years.
- Feature surfaces
- TV walls, headboards, ceiling rafters, entrance panelling. This is where natural veneer, fluted profiles and Solidwood panels earn their cost, because the surface is seen constantly and touched rarely.
- Wet zones
- Sink cabinets, utility areas, bathroom vanities, balcony-facing walls. Specify BWP or marine-grade plywood underneath and moisture-stable surfaces on top. Nothing else is worth the risk in Kolkata.
Specify for Kolkata’s climate, not a catalogue photograph
Kolkata runs humid for a large part of the year, and monsoon humidity is what actually destroys badly specified interiors. Untreated boards swell at the edges, poorly bonded veneer lifts, and cheap glue lines fail quietly inside a cabinet where nobody sees them until a shutter stops closing. The fix is not exotic — it is correct board grade, properly sealed edges and a finish appropriate to the room.
- Board grade first
- A premium finish over a poor substrate fails at the substrate. BWP-grade plywood for anything near water; good commercial grade elsewhere.
- Seal every edge
- Most moisture damage enters through unsealed edges and drill holes, not through the visible face. Edge banding is not a cosmetic detail.
- Choose finishes that tolerate humidity
- PU and melamine finishes on veneer, and acrylic or PETG on high-use fronts, hold up markedly better than untested budget alternatives.
Mix materials deliberately — do not finish a whole home in one surface
Rooms finished entirely in one material read flat, however good that material is. The approach professional designers use is a hierarchy: one dominant surface, one supporting surface, one accent. A veneer feature wall works because the laminate wardrobes beside it are quieter. Fluted louvers read as architecture because the wall around them is plain. Decide the hierarchy before choosing finishes, and the individual selections become much easier.

- The surface the eye lands on first — usually a veneer, Solidwood or fluted panel on the room’s main wall.
- Supporting
- Wardrobes, storage and cabinetry in a laminate or acrylic that complements rather than competes.
- Accent
- Decorative brick, a metal-finish laminate or a single high-gloss element — used once, not repeated.

What is the difference between veneer and laminate?
Veneer is a thin slice of real natural wood, so every sheet carries authentic grain and can be polished — and re-polished years later — like solid wood. Laminate is a printed decorative surface: extremely durable, uniform and easy to maintain, but without natural variation. Most designers use veneer on statement surfaces and laminate on high-use shutters and internals.
